The Discipline Nobody Talks About: Knowing When to Stop

There are very few people in the world who would be where they are today without discipline. You can’t escape needing to be disciplined to be successful. It’s impossible.

It’s more than just the whole “work hard everyday” discipline. If you’re in school, are you studying? What if you have a child? Are you disciplined enough to know their needs and how to help them?

I’d like to think there’s a form of discipline that doesn’t get mentioned a lot, like the title suggests. That’s being disciplined enough to know when to stop. Going back to the “work hard everyday” idea, you literally can’t work all day everyday. It’s not going to go the way you want.

I can’t stand social media sometimes, particularly certain influencers, who promote working all day everyday as hard as you can. Don’t worry though, just buy their course and devote everything you have to them and you’ll be good. It’s all such a joke, but back to my point…

When you’re actually realistic about all of this stuff, know when to quit. There is no good work to be done when you can barely keep your eyes open. I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve had to mentally recalibrate recently with this idea, and it’s taken a lot of stress off my mind. Would you rather work on your last legs and fix it all the next day, or get some rest and not have to fix much of anything? That’s what I started thinking to myself, and applying. Same goes for the gym, my favorite analogy. I’ve skipped multiple workouts before because I have my son which leads to little sleep, and then I go work most of the day. Not a good setup for a lift which has resulted in me putting my pride away and resting.

All in all, know when to stop before it’s too late. Yeah, it won’t feel great in the moment. You’ll thank yourself though when you don’t have a giant mess to clean up, or you don’t feel like shit. Up to you though.

Forever learning. Always building.
